Here you live among monumental buildings, characteristic canals and lively squares, such as the Neude, Mariaplaats and Janskerkhof. The atmosphere is unique: historic and vibrant at the same time.

Did you know that Utrecht's Inner City consists of five city quarters? Each quarter has its own atmosphere and character:

Domkwartier – The heart of the city, the iconic Dom Tower. Here you'll find the magnificent Dom Church and its cloister garden, charming streets such as Utrecht's oldest paved shopping street: Zadelstraat. From the Dom Tower, you can easily walk to the Wed, where you'll find many cozy and excellent restaurants, such as Bistro Madeleine and Sea Salt Saloon.

Museum Quarter – This quarter includes, among others, the charming Twijnstraat where you can do your daily shopping very well, with a Keurslager (specialty butcher), Albert Heijn (supermarket), a fishmonger, greengrocer, and a cheese shop. The Ledig Erf with many nice cafes and restaurants such as De Poort and Léo Léo.

Stadhuiskwartier – Utrecht icons such as the Winkel van Sinkel and the Neude are located in the Stadhuiskwartier, as is – as the name suggests – the City Hall.

University Quarter - This part of the city is flourishing more and more, with nice shops like Juta and the Voorstraat, which has undergone a major renovation with more and more nice restaurants like Koenraad, Loft88, and wine bar VinVin.

Vredenburg Quarter – Shopping on Steenweg and in Hoog Catharijne, to a concert in Tivoli Vredenburg, and near the station. The Vredenburg Quarter is a versatile neighborhood, with Utrecht's restaurant street: Drieharingstraat.

Schools

In and around the Inner City you will find several elementary schools, child care locations and high schools. Think of: Agatha Snellen School, the Free School, St. Gregorius College and St. Bonifatius College. The Hogeschool Utrecht and Utrecht University are also within walking or biking distance.

Accessibility

Downtown Utrecht is easily accessible, especially by public transportation:

5-minute bike ride to Utrecht Centraal the largest train station in the city, with connections throughout the Netherlands

Excellent bus connections – virtually every district and surrounding neighborhoods are easily accessible

The bike is ideal – the narrow streets and one-way roads often make the bike faster than the car.

In the Inner City of Utrecht, as a resident you can apply for a parking permit for the residents' zone. Keep in mind that parking spots are limited and there may be a waiting list. Costs are higher than in suburbs, but a permit allows you to park in the immediate area.

Many residents also opt for parking garages, P+R locations just outside the city center, or use shared bicycles and cars, because the streets are narrow and traffic can be heavy. This way, you can combine convenience with living in the historic heart of the city.

Shopping downtown

Living in Utrecht's Inner City means having everything within walking distance.
